Natasha's Law
The Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs announced Natasha's Law in 2019.
Natasha's Law requires all food businesses in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland to include labels featuring a full list of ingredients on all pre-packaged food. This law means that from 1st October 2021 caterers are required, under food safety legislation, to provide the same allergen information as they do for the school meals, for any food that is provided by the school caterers to be eaten off the premises, such as packed lunches.
If the packed lunches are pre-ordered for individual children then they do not have to label every packed lunch with the allergens, but they will have to publish the allergens as they do for the school meals. The best and easiest way to do this is on ParentPay where parents pre-order food. They must include everything you may find in the school packed lunch.
As this is a requirement under food safety legislation, the Environmental Health Officers will be checking this on their site visits.
If a parent has not been able to pre-order an on-site school meal via Parent Pay for their child, the only option the school caterers can provide is a plain jacket potato for any FSM child.
Other parents will need to provide a packed lunch on the day or collect their child and take them home for lunch, returning for afternoon registration.
