PERSONAL, HEALTH & SOCIAL, ECONOMIC & CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION AT OAK GREEN SCHOOL

Why do we teach what we teach? (Our intent)

Our PSHE curriculum at Oak Green is centred around ‘mindfulness’, safety and values. To deliver this curriculum we use a resource called ‘Jigsaw PSHE’. The aims of this PSHE curriculum is to perfectly connect the pieces of Personal, Social and Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development. Through this learning it is our intention to prepare children for life outside of school, helping them to understand and value who they truly are and to know how they relate to other people in our ever-changing world, underpinned by a strong foundation of our core values.

How do we teach it? (Our implementation)

The Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work is taught through weekly sessions led by teachers and teaching assistants. All lessons include time for mindfulness activities where children practise breathing and focus. There are 6 Jigsaw Puzzles (half-termly units) designed to ensure the whole school can study the same learning theme at the same time. They are carefully planned and resources so that each year group works at its own level. The Puzzles work in sequence and develop throughout each academic year.

The 6 units are:

  • Being Me in my World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

What is the difference that this makes? (Our impact)

The impact of teaching PSHE in this way is that children develop an awareness of themselves and the part they play in the relationships they develop. Our PSHE curriculum is a spiral curriculum so that progress will build incrementally year -on-year at an age appropriate level. Children have a better understanding of mental health and how they can have a positive impact on others and the world around them. Children will value and respect one another and demonstrate the Believe, Achieve, Succeed values in action.
